Tyler & Kelsey get their First Ribbons

In August of 2004 Tyler and Kelsey celebrated the birth oftheir first cria. It was a male out of their National Fleece
show
reserve champion female Nebula and Sandman, a fawn Caligula son.
We
decided that the 2004 baby would be Tyler’s to name so after much
thinking, the name of Fantom was chosen. Fantom went in the
show ring
at NAAS and MAPACA and came out with 2nd place finishes in both
shows.
Wow, not a bad start for a 5 and a 3 year old, now they must be
ready to
start picking up manure. This year we bred the awesome Nebula
to
Hollywood making it one of the more anticipated births of the year,
August 05. Fantom and the kids are pictured.

Hilltop Hosts Neo-Natal Clinic
For some time now we have been trying to decide on an educational
opportunity that we could
offer here at our facility. We
wanted it to be a first class event. After racking our brains
and talking to folks in the industry we’ve decided that a Neo-Natal
Clinic might be of the most value to breeders in the Northeast.
We are lucky enough to have one of the top alpaca vets in the
northeast, as our alpaca health mentor, in Dr. Chris Camann.
We sat down with Dr. Camann to start the planning process and we
asked her to call Dr. LaRue Johnson, world famous for his clinics,
and ask if we could borrow his mechanical uteruses for our event.
Well something magical happened during that phone call, Dr. Johnson
said that he would love to come and work with Dr. Camann on the
clinic here at Hilltop.
So that’s how it got started and here
are the facts. We will be having a Neo-Natal Clinic here at
Hilltop Alpacas on Saturday October 1st under the
direction of Dr. LaRue Johnson and Dr. Chris Camann from
approximately 8:00am till 5:00pm with dinner to follow.
Participation is limited to 25 people at a cost of $275.00 per
person with proceeds going towards
scholarships for vet students specializing in Camelids at both
Colorado State and Cornell University. Exciting times at
Hilltop for sure!

Herdsire Sales
One of the hardest things to do in this industry is sell males and
Hilltop is proud to announce a pair of Herdsire Sales.
First, the highly decorated and highly acclaimed Amadeus has moved
barns to Finger Lakes Alpacas in Weedsport NY. Amadeus was
really the next generation of Grey when he came on the show scene in
1999, virtually never walking out of the ring with out a blue
ribbon. He did wonders here at Hilltop criating some amazing
cria, in all colors, but especially in grey. We made the
decision in the winter of 2005 that we would make some space in our
Herdsire barn for the next King of Grey and Called Ken and Polly
Michaelis first to see if they had any interest in acquiring
Amadeus. Without hesitation they agreed and the deal was done.
If you have any interest in breeding with one of the best, contact
Ken and Polly to schedule a breeding to Amadeus!
Second and a first for Hilltop, we sold ½ of a male.
Co-ownership was something that has always made us a little nervous
but when Tim and Barb Wilson of Alpacas of Pleasant Valley
approached us about purchasing ½ of Predictor we couldn’t think of a
finer farm we would like to co-own an animal with. Predictor
finished out his show career with us, started his breeding career
here as well and then moved on to Alpacas of Pleasant Valley in the
beginning of July for the remainder of the summer and beyond.
Predictor’s first cria will be hitting the ground next May and we
can’t wait.
The Herd Keeps Growing
2004 was an amazing year for us, we sold 22 animals, including a
bunch for clients and had an amazing amount of outside breedings
accomplished. We had to start collecting animals again and boy
did we get some winners, with incredible bloodlines. The
highlights of this year’s purchases are Belle, a Full Accoyo
Snowmaster Daughter bred to Super Nova. Thanks Cas-Cad-Nac
Farm for selling Tyler and Kelsey such a special animal. The
purchase of A of O Silver Celebration, arguably the best grey alpaca
in the world. We purchased ½ ownership of this male from Jeff
& Beth Kressin of Alpaca of Ohio and are so excited to be on this
ride called the Silver Express. This wasn’t it though we also
purchased females out of Legacy Gold, Incaaccoyo Star, Snowmass
Nova, Silver Dollar, Jericho 69i and El Negro.
